Welcome to scoutabout!

Formerly a wayward wanderer, I’ve sublimated my devilish tendencies into a benign quirkiness that defines my travels.  This blog is dedicated, finding cool places to see and exploring the world; but what sets it apart is my unique brand of wanderlust.

I’ve been to all the usual places, but if you’re in Paris, you don’t need a blog to point you to the Eiffel Tower.  But how about a semi-public place in the City of Light for a frisky/romantic (ahem) “encounter?”   Instead of the standard New York restaurant recommendations, how about a place that serves you food that’s still alive?

Of course, not everyone is in search of freakishness when they travel; and for the mjost part, neither am I.  Accordingly, I’ll offer plenty of “normal” picks in terms of places to stay and whatnot; but for each destination, I’ll point out the unexpected and the unconventional.  This blog is all about discovering the unorthodox, the eccentric, and occasionally the weird.  After all, it’s the unusual experiences we remember most in our peregrinations about the globe.  I’m always scouting about for things unique and different in my journeys, so say good-bye to the commonplace, and hello to the distinctive!  Enjoy!

Some of my favorite travel sites:

http://www.kayak.com - find good fares from LOTs of sites

http://www.tripadvisor.com - find reviews on hotels and things to do from users who have experienced them

http://virtualtourist.com - like trip advisor, but even more focused on real experiences from real people

http://travel.yahoo.com Yahoo travel a great resource

http://www.kango.com - Travel focused on where to stay and what to do while your there, they aggregate reviews from around the web, and figure out what people are saying so that they can tell what is good for Romantic travelers, Family travelers, travelers with pets etc.

http://expedia.com one of the first and one of the best travel booking sites (not as cool as Kayak if you ask me, but still good.

  1. Nice blog. I feel the same. Visiting, or blogging, about the Eiffel tower or the usual tourist hot-spots is really boring. Travel should mean getting to know the city, it’s people, the food and restaurants and the hidden gems.

Keep posting. I’ll be checking in again now and ten to see what you’ve been up to.
