Surfing into Monterey
I’ve had that song in my head for a few days, so I took it as a sign that it’s time to send Tomo to
The first issue to address is accommodations. I am a huge fan of B&B and inns, so when given the chance, I’ll opt for those more personal and intimate types of lodging. I found a neat place to stay–Old Monterey Inn, a historic inn and B&B. Since money is no object, I’m opting for the charming Garden Cottage for $430 per night. Check out the relaxing spa services they offer, and the lush gardens on the estate. There’s even an online garden tour to give you a taste of what to expect on your visit!
The next task is to get Tomo some surfing lessons. Whether a beginner who has never hit the surf before or intermediate wave rider looking to pick up a few new pointers, surf lessons provide the option of having licensed instructors lead the way. Adventures by the Sea offers the chance to discover
With lessons covered, it’s time to determine the best spot and conditions so that Tomo can take his new surfer skillz to the next level. There are two sites that offer just the info needed. The first is WannaSurf.com, a site that lists not only spots for surfing, but the appropriate skill level recommended for each area. The site is broken down by geographical area, so potential surfers can go to the Monterey page and look for surf spots that meet their skill level along the
Before heading out to the surf spot chosen, it’s important to know the weather and ocean conditions. That is where MontereyInfo.org’s Surf Report comes in handy. Just stop by the site for daily info and extended forecasts on
Lastly, if Tomo plans ahead, he can swing an afternoon at the 51st annual Monterey Jazz Festival. This sounds like the perfect way to end a long day in the sun. Choose from tickets on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday (or all three). Spend some time nursing those surfer aches and unwinding to the smooth sounds of live jazz while enjoying wine, champagne, or a cold beer. This year’s artists include Maceo Parker (after whom one of my cats is named), Herbie Hancock, Cassandra Wilson, Jamie Cullum, Nancy Wilson, and the Berklee-Monterey Latin Jazz All-Stars.
So, Dear Readers, the next time you are catching a wave, be on the look-out—Tomo may be right there with you. And be kind to the bedraggled looking man you pass at the MJF/51 with the sunburn and wind-swept look. It may just be Tomo recovering from his first official day spent trying to get in the barrel!

To my knowledge, he doesn’t currently surf (at least not often and not like a pro). But that’s not a problem at all—I’ve got everything covered! The first issue to address is accommodations.
