Sandfest in Seattle
With Seattle’s finicky weather, end of summer might not be the best time to hit the beaches, but its Saturday, August 23 2008, which is a whole new thing, cause its time to take your bucket and shovel and head for Westlake Park, Seattle.
Well, not exactly. You don’t need the shovel, unless you plan to knock off a few heads and shins. You see, its Sandfast 2008 at Westlake Park and Westlake Plaza from 11 am to 5 pm, site of Seattle’s very own urban beach festival, with giant sand sculptures and live music. From 11 am to 1 pm, Sonando will present a fusion mix of Afro-Cuban rythms and Jazz. 1.30-3 pm is time to bring out the hoops and dance along the Pacific Island band and Hula dancers. From 3.30-5 pm, The Islanders perform Calypso and Reggae with steel drums and superlative performers. Seattle vacations don’t get any livelier than this (very sleepy place actually, inspite of whatever Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan may say), so if you’re there, you’re a lucky dog.
You can vote on the sand sculptures by buying a voting token. Its a benefit for Big brother Big Sisters of Puget Sound, so you’re actually doing a good thing here. Voting closes at 4.30 pm. If you have kids tagging along, there’s also a kids’ sandbox. Well, I suppose they won’t mind if you say you want to play in it too…
