New York City Travel Guidebooks & Comic Con
The New York Times has a terrific article which focuses on the pros and cons of six major New York City guidebooks. The list includes:
- New York City 2009 from Fodor’s Travel (Random House, Paperback, 552 pages, $18.95)
- The 2008 Timeout New York Guide (Timeout, Paperback, 415 pages, $13.57)
- Lonely Planet’s New York City Guide (Lonely Planet Publications, 464 pages, $13.59)
- Frommer’s New York City 2009 (Frommer’s, 416 pages, $18.99)
- The Wallpaper City Guide New York (Phaidon Press, Papeback, 128 pages, $8.95)
- Hg2: A Hedonist’s Guide to New-York (Hg2, Hardcover, 228 pages, $18.95)
You can read the full article here, and its well worth a read, if only to find out what the major guidebook publishers think is important for a tour of the Big Apple, going forward in 2009. I don’t want to try to top the article, so I’ll leave it at that, except for repeating the warning that the last two guides are intended for an upscale readership who can afford to blow upwards of $300 per night at New York hotels.
Speaking of which, if you want to stay at a prime location near the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center for New York Comic Con (Feb 6-8 2009), then you better start thinking about booking a room pronto. The Comic Con travel desk has reserved special, discounted rooms at local hotels now and can also help you book rental cars and flights. Here’s a list of decent hotels near the Javits Center which are officially recommended by New York Comic Con.
Registration for Comic Con is now open and ticket sales are also now open online. Major area comic retailers will stock tickets in the near future. Fan prices are: Weekend, $50; Friday, $30; Saturday, $40; Sunday, $30; Kids Day (Sunday), free for children 12 and under.
