Wal-Mart Employee Trampled To Death by NY Shoppers

Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, Nassau County, NYThis is intolerable. Its no big secret that Black Friday holiday shopping in New York is more of a contact sport than a leisurely activity, but how frenzied do you have to do be, in order to trample and kill a poor man doing his job, so that you can get in first and get hold of the best bargains?

This is exactly what happened in Long Island, at the Green Acres Mall on Sunrise Highway in Valley Stream, Nassau County, NY. The crowd had been building up all night Thursday, and filling the sidewalks and the parking lot. At 3.30 am Friday, Nassau County police had to be called in for crowd control. By 4.55 am, the crowd had grown to over 2000, and no police were in sight. The tension was building, and the crowd started pushing against the glass sliding doors of the Wal-Mart, which started to buckle under the pressure. Photo copyrights Green Acres Mall

Wal-Mart employees inside tried to push back, but it was a hopeless contest. The door shattered, and the mob streamed in, totally out of control. A temp who had been hired for the holiday season, Jdimytai Damour, was thrown back on to the floor and badly trampled on by on-rushing shoppers. Some others were also run over. Damour died an hour later at Hospital Medical Center in Valley Stream.

I don’t know if police or Wal-Mart of anyone concerned is seeking to file any charges against the involved shoppers (doesn’t sound likely), but I’d still like to see some justice done. This kind of unhealthy shopping craze should not be let go unpunished. Maybe every single nutjob in the entire horde could be made to do community service at a Wal-Mart for a year. Might teach them a thing or two about shopping etiquette.

  1. I frequent that Walmart. (Not this day…thank God.)

I must say that I am in shock over this.

I agree with you, Thomas, about justice being done.

Were these people who refused to stop shopping going home and showing off their electronic gadgets? “I helped kill a person and got this whatever dirt cheap.”

What a bunch of damn animals!

And, I do fault Walmart as well!

I got very emotional late Friday night. I just started thinking that could have been me, a family member or a dear friend. Very frightening.

Thank you for letting have my say.

  2. Erica, we still might see justice served. Apparently the cops have video footage of the incident, and they’re trying to determine which of the shoppers are most directly responsible for the death of Jdimytai Damour.
