Ghost Buster Tries to Can Spirits at Old Cuchillo Bar, NM

There’s a reason why this old buzzard of a ghost chose to ignore all the fantastic dated ruins of Albuquerque motels along Route 66, and instead is squatting at the Old Cuchillo Bar, in Cuchillo, about 2 hours south of Albuquerque.

Old Cuchillo Bar & Saloon, New Mexico

Sure, the Route 66 motels have colorful stories and probably have ‘No Vacancy’ signs up in bright neon which only ghosts can see, but the Old Cuchillo Bar is on average a 100 years older than most Route 66 motels - which makes for a heck of a lot more history. The Cuchillo Bar is located near Truth or Consequences (T or C, NM), and Elephant Butte, New Mexico, and opened it’s doors for business around 1850 as a stagecoach stop.

It’s been through many transformations after that, from trading post to post office to a hotel and saloon. To top off the grim history with recent happenings, there was a devastating fire in 2000 and monsoon damage in 2008. And, of course, right now it’s a vacation rental.

Let’s look at the facts…well, facts as alleged by Owner J Bond (no, not that one…), who speaks of dark and unexplained phenomena - like pot-bellied stoves opening, and strange whispers, and things falling off shelves and such-like. Classic case for the ghost buster. Which is Andy Rice of the WCGAPs aka West Coast Ghost and Paranormal Investigation - a Phoenix based non-profit which tries to separate science from spirit. Results of the ghost-buster’s investigations are awaited.

If you’re beginning to like what you’re hearing, then book yourself a vacation rental at the Old Cucillo Bar. At the very least, you’ll be able to enjoy the many attractions in Albuquerque, and do some shopping for native Indian mementos and hand-crafted wares.

And if you’re lucky, you could end up facing the dark netherworldly spirits head-on. Here’s a few tips for fighting poltergiests and other ‘we’re-just-havin-a-party’ kind of ghosts. So long as you don’t let then give you a wedgie, you’re fine. Once you get a wedgie, they have the power, and you’re toast. Oh, and take along a crucifix, some holy water and maybe even cart along a Priest. Just in case…
